Winter brings with it colder temperatures that can significantly impact the behaviour of padel balls, affecting your playing experience. These changes not only influence bounce and ball control, but also the overall dynamics of the game. In this article, we explore the factors that explain why padel balls respond differently in winter and offer practical tips on how to adapt to these conditions.

1. The internal pressure of the ball decreases.

Padel balls are pressurised with air inside, which gives them the necessary elasticity for optimal bounce. However, when the temperature drops, the air inside the ball contracts, reducing the internal pressure. This results in less bounce and a heavier feel when hitting the ball.

What to do?

  • Use balls designed for cold weather, as these ensure more consistent performance.
  • Avoid leaving balls in cold environments before playing, such as inside a car or outdoors. Keep them in a warm place before the game, you can warm up the balls by rolling them between your hands or keeping them near a heat source for 5-10 minutes before playing.

2. Cold reduces bounce and elasticity

The cold also affects the rubber that coats padel balls, reducing their elasticity. This has a direct impact on the bounce, which becomes lower, and decreases the speed of the ball in the air, affecting your performance during winter matches.

How to adapt?

  • Adjust your technique in anticipation of a lower bounce. Position yourself closer to the point of impact and use more controlled strokes to compensate for the loss of speed.
  • Avoid relying on overly powerful strokes. Instead, prioritise accuracy and place the ball strategically

3.  Dealing with wind and humidity on the court

Wind and moisture can significantly influence the performance of the ball. Wind can deflect the trajectory of the ball, complicating the accuracy of your shots, while humidity can reduce the grip of both the paddle and the ball, affecting control during play.

Tips:

  • Use the wind to your advantage. When the wind is in your favour, play with high and long lobs to gain time and depth in your shots. And if the wind is against you, adjust the force of your impacts and prioritise flatter and faster shots to reduce the effect of the wind.
  • Keep your equipment in top condition. A grippy grip is key to maintaining firm control of your racket in wet conditions. If your balls are absorbing too much moisture, replace them with dry ones to avoid loss of performance.
