Padel courts has grown exponentially in popularity, but few people stop to think about the details that make the courts what they are today. From their materials to their dimensions, every aspect of the design has a reason for being. In this article we tell you five fascinating curiosities that will change the way you see a padel court.

1. Blue was not always the standard color

Although today it is hard to imagine a padel court without its iconic blue color, it wasn’t always that way. Originally, they were green to resemble natural grass, following the tradition of tennis. However, the transition to blue was made to improve the vision of both players and television viewers. This change was pushed by the International Padel Federation (FIP) in the mid-2000s, and since then, it has become the worldwide standard.

2. Perfect dimensions have roots in squash

The official dimensions of a padel court (20 meters long by 10 meters wide) are not arbitrary. These dimensions were designed to maximize the dynamism and strategy of the game, inspired by sports such as squash and tennis. Enrique Corcuera, considered the “father” of paddle tennis, originally adapted the measurements to fit the limited space he had available at his home in Acapulco, Mexico. This size proved ideal for encouraging quick ball exchanges and more agile play.

3. Turf thickness affects the speed of play

The artificial turf of a padel court is not uniform; its height can vary slightly depending on the desired ball speed. A shorter turf (generally 10-12 mm) accelerates the bounce, ideal for fast games, while a longer turf can slow down the ball, favoring more strategic exchanges. This allows organizers to adjust court conditions for different types of competitions.

4. Soil materials are designed for performance

Artificial turf is specially designed to balance ball speed and player traction. It is composed of polyethylene fibers that reduce the risk of injury and allow for uniform bounce. In addition, the blue color of the artificial turf not only improves visibility, but also has properties that reduce glare in bright conditions.

5. Corners allow the ball to bounce more evenly.

The corners of the court are designed to influence play. Their precise curve allows the ball to bounce more evenly and predictably, facilitating strategic and recovery plays. This design was refined over time after studying how players interacted with the walls during matches.
